COMANDO SUZIE/Ô PARADIS "Split" Review on

Parlavamo del nuovo full-length di Ô Paradis giusto poco tempo fa, ed a breve distanza dalla sua uscita ritroviamo il progetto dell'infaticabile artista spagnolo Demian alle prese con un'ulteriore release, nonostante in soli sei anni di attività il Nostro abbia già superato abbondantemente le dieci pubblicazioni (in vari formati). Trattasi nuovamente di un 7" split, come quelli già realizzati da Ô Paradis assieme ad Allerseelen e Nový Svet, e stavolta i 'partners in crime' sono i debuttanti Comando Suzie, provenienti da Barcellona e concittadini dello stesso Demian, oltre che affini per motivi squisitamente artistici (come vedremo tra poco). Partiamo proprio dai Comando Suzie, duo di recentissima costituzione (2006) formato da Raúl López ed Ella che, nella facciata a propria disposizione, ci offre il brano "El Pequeño Tamborilero": una sarcastica allegoria 'neo-folk'n'pop' dai tratti cantautoriali, esplicata attraverso trame strumentali che non possono non ricordare proprio il lavoro di Ô Paradis, nonché corredata dai fatidici samples (alcuni dei quali in italiano) e giocata su di un testo che fa il verso a qualche (presunto?) gruppo neofolk andaluso dalle simpatie hitleriane. Avvolgente intensità ed un buon refrain fanno il resto in una traccia che mette la fatidica 'pulce nell'orecchio' riguardo ai Comando Suzie, con l'imminente full-length "Pobres Chavales" (sempre per l'italica Punch) pronto a svelarcene la sorprendente vena pop-sintetica. Ô Paradis, invece, torna ad offrirci un saggio del suo inconfondibile stile con "Pergamino", brano aperto da una triste introduzione che, ben presto, assume i connotati dell'ennesima ballata accorata, stanca e minimale dal gusto ispanico/industriale, impreziosita da una sentita interpretazione (come da copione in lingua madre) di Demian. È sempre difficile assegnare una valutazione a release di questo tipo, per lo più destinate ai completisti (il vinile in questione esce in sole 300 copie), ma quella in esame ha il buon merito di farci scoprire un act interessante come Comando Suzie (oltre ovviamente a quello di offrirci un'ulteriore valida canzone di Ô Paradis), quindi, collezionisti o meno che siate, fateci un pensiero.

Breve ma intenso, si dice. Lo stesso concetto si potrebbe applicare al 7" in oggetto. Giustamente, solo due brani, ma entrambi valevoli ognuno per suo conto l'acquisto di questa chicca su vinile. Per chi già conosce O Paradis, "Pergamino" è sia una riconferma del sentire espresso nell'ultima release Cuando el tiempo sopla che l'occasione di scoprirne un lato più cupo, sofferto. E così il suo iniziale incedere di piano, lieve e al tempo stesso drammatico, riprende poi la linea melanconico-rétro cara all'ultima release di Demian, volgendola però in sonorità e modulazioni vocali emotivamente più piene, frutto di una (apparentemente) semplice e (molto) sapiente combinazione di armonie. Comando Suzie ha in comune con O Paradis due cose, principalmente: la presenza di Demian, qui alla chitarra acustica, e un gusto innato per le armonie amare. Attraverso un ritmo discreto e incisivo e la voce profonda e decisa di Raùl Lòpez, "El pequeño tamborilero" crea una forma-canzone riconducibile a un folk-pop acustico intelligente e curato, lasciando la curiosità di scoprire di più riguardo questo nome. Specialmente dopo averne scoperto, sul relativo MySpace, la reale anima old-electro-pop… una sorpresa molto interessante, che chi scrive attende su cd con impazienza. Uno split che offre non solo il piacere dell'inedito, ma anche di scoprire così due lati differenti di O Paradis e Comando Suzie, e in una maniera che definire deliziosa sarebbe limitante. Da avere!

COMANDO SUZIE jak niektórzy już wiedzą, jest grupą pochodzącą z Barcelony. Kilka ich utworów demo w estetyce electro/pop można od jakiegoś czasu posłuchać na myspace, zaś ten siedmiocalowy split z O PARADIS jest ich oficjalnym debiutem. COMANDO SUZIE zamieściło na tym splicie utwór „El Pequeno Tamborilero”, czyli tłumacząc na polski: „Mały dobosz”. Kawałek ten jest nieco inny od tych wspomnianych wyżej demówek. Och, jak ja lubię tą piosenkę, no i rzecz jasna tekst, który moim zdanie jest absolutnie fantastyczny. Jeszcze chyba nikt nie wpadł na to, by nagrać tak świetny neo folkowy kawałek, który neo folkiem nie jest. Ha, a czym właściwie jest neo folk?. Na pewno nie runami, mundurami i wystrzałami armatnimi. Z resztą to już rozważania na inną okazję, bo nie chcę za bardzo rozzłościć czytelników tej recenzji, do których owy tekst się odnosi, bo na pewno tacy się znajdą;). Więc cicho, sza! Reasumując, brawa dla Raula i spółki za odwagę, bezpretensjonalność i za poczucie humoru, rzecz jasna! Czekam na więcej. A na deser dla wszystkich chętnych i niechętnych mały prezent, cały tekst z „El Pequeno Tamborilero” (by zrozumieli, że słów „folk” czy „totenkopf” można użyć również w innym, niż zazwyczaj kontekście).

Druga strona płytki należy do reszty załogi z Barcelony, czyli Demiana, O PARADIS i przepięknej kompozycji „Pergamino”. Rozpoczyna się niezwykle filmowo… Pianino, głos brzmiący jakby pochodził ze starej audycji, lub filmu hiszpańskiego. Dalej słyszymy „klasyczny” O PARADIS. Bez eksperymentów, innowacji, po prostu w estetyce, do której grupa zdążyła już nas przyzwyczaić na swoich pierwszych wydawnictwach. Płynąca ballada skłaniająca do refleksji. Tak bliska rzeczywistości i tak odległa od niej zarazem. Wciąż nie mogę się nadziwić, jak Damianowi udaje się za każdym razem wprowadzić moją duszę w stan tak silnego poczucia zawieszenia pomiędzy światami. I uśmiech, i nadzieja. One są zawsze w tej muzyce.

COMANDO SUZIE, as some of you already know, is a project coming from Barcelona. Some of their demo tracks are available to hear on their Myspace, and this 7" split with O PARADIS is their official debut. There is a song on this release called „El Pequeno Tamborilero”, which in English means "A little drummer". This track is slightly different from demos mentioned above. Oh, how I love this song, and the lyrics of course, which in my opinion are absolutely fantastic. I think no one concieved the idea of creating a neofolk song, which is not neofolk. Ha, what is neofolk anyway? Surely not the runes, uniforms or artillery shots.Well, it's not a time nor place for such discussions, because I don't want to anger the readers of this review which "El Pequeno Tamborilero" lyrics are about. So hush, hush! In short, standing ovations for Raul & Co. for courage, modesty and a sense of humour of course! Waiting for some more. And for dessert, for those who are interested and for those who aren't, a small gift - lyrics of "El Pequeno Tamborilero” (to understand that words like "folk" or "totenkopf" could be used in a different context than usual)

Second side of this small vinyl belongs to the rest of Barcelona crew, that is Demian, O PARADIS and beautiful song called "Pergamino". It starts very cinematic... Piano, some voice which sounds like from an old broadcast or a Spanish movie. After that we hear old "classic" O PARADIS. No experiments, no innovations, simply in aesthetics which is known so well since first releases. Flowing ballad, stimulating to make some reflections. So close to reality and at the same time so distant... I'm still amazed that Demian every single time leads my soul to a state of such a strong suspension between worlds. And smile, and hope. They're always in this music.

Limited to 300 copies this 7" split single contains two songs from Comando Suzie and O Paradis respectively. The first band see also Demian of O Paradis as guest guitar. Comando Suzie present a nice neo-folk song but approaching the genre in a personal way, with a certain experimental touch regarding the background noises but with also a pop sensibility really functional. I really liked its atmosphere. O Paradis' song "Pergamino" sounds like an outtake coming from the session of the latest album "Cuando El Tiempo Sopla" because of Demian's way of creating dreamy atmospheres with his experimental approach to acustic ballads. A nice single which really surprised me making me know Comando Suzie.

Ce nouveau split de Ô Paradis sort simultanément avec son nouvel album "Cuando El Tiempo Sopla", et il nous présente une nouvelle formation espagnole, Comando Suzie.
Nouveaux venus sur Punch Records, ils m'étaient totalement inconnus jusque-là. C'est un duo qui évolue dans une musique minimale synthétique, dans l'esprit des années 80, ils sont à rapprocher de Wermut ou d'un Solitude FX à tendance ibérique. Ici le titre proposé est en accord avec celui de Ô Paradis, dans un esprit plus folk trip hop. Demian y joue d'ailleurs de la guitare et le résulat est très convaincant. "El Pequeño Tamborilero" est une ballade gracieuse et mélancolique où les percussions, la guitare et de petits rythmes désarticulés se perdent avec douceur et simplicité. Ô Paradis présente un morceau triste et mystérieux de bonne facture à la rythmique complexe, constitué de divers boucles plus ou moins ralenties, d'un orgue imposant et d'une guitare aérienne.
Ce 7" s'adresse aux collectionneurs et aux amoureux du genre, les titres sont des inédits de qualités, et il nous fait découvrir un groupe prometteur dont on attend un album sur Punch Productions pour en prendre toute la mesure.
